Sexual Harassment? Me? Guy? Not– ME.
The other morning– I had a long drawn out discussion about the person I knew as Guy Allen. Guy was the youngest member of John Winston’s group and he came onboard [signed with Rockwell] sometime after I did in 1985. It was said he was just out of Maryland with an Electrical Engineering degree.
When I first arrived- I shared an office with Doug Masterson. Grace Cho [nee Kim- married within a year of signing with Rockwell] and Guy Allen shared an office.
Ralston Reed and Parsan Manukul the other office team mates though Parsarn was not a member of Winston’s group.
Were were the Systems Analysis group. All of the members supposedly had degrees in a science. Listed by age [my birth certificate age– Grace, Me and doug all same year on birth certificates]:
- John Winston– short thesis PHD mathematics– John Winston also pursued Computer science degree George Mason when I knew him.
- Bert Manfredi– not sure education.. he leaves Johns group early
- Ralston Read — Mechanical Engineering BS– UVA, MBA Leaves John’s group after 2 or 3 years.
- Frank Silverio General Science- I think Penn.
- Grace Cho Electrical Engineering Maryland
- Regina Thomas Mathematics BS Bowie
- Douglas Masterson– Computer Science BS
- Tong Lee Computer Science — not sure where
Guy Allen Electrical Engineering Maryland — In the 93 or so– Guy claimed to get his master’s in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins.
I have in digital format- resumes for some of the group members as of 94 or so. The resumes were part of a RFP we all submitted our resumes too…
Now, the discussion the other morning about Guy. Guy said he did not come to rockwell to program… that is basically what john’s group did. Not Pete– but everyone else.
Let me give some background first. I developed a sophisticated HR package for the office in 93. Read here– post from mar 4, 2011, here– post from Jan. 31, 2010..
In 2000 or so– I noticed that I had problems running the HR system with the new Microsoft Office Professional [included MS Access] Suite I got. the problem– snd keys no longer worked. The WAM function of the system no longer worked. I did not install my older version of MS access until recently– and everything worked fine.. See this post.
I thought someone tried to say — Guy Allen took credit for the HR system. I was not really worried– it was 20 years ago– and why would this be important now? that said- I did address the question– here.
The other morning– I asked if I misunderstood. I recounted an event which took place in 1990 or so.
In 1988 or so, Rockwell got an OMNIBUS contract to write EM Engineering Programs for the Navy. Later– Doug and I started learning the X-Window platform and C. We had been using mostly FORTRAN up until then.
I had been working with Doug on a program called BAM then I got my own– CAdsDiS. We used a Rockwell developed GUI– so it was natural for us to move on to the X-Window System GUI development environment.
At the same time– Guy and Grace were working on something called EMSCAPE. Initially it was a database system that used the PC version of Oracle.
The Navy actually wanted all of their programs to run on UNIX or DEC systems and so though Grace and Guy did a lot of work with the PC and ORACLE– the distributed environment the Navy wanted for all of the programs was a little hard to achieve with the PC and ORacle.
We had RDBMS running on our DEC cluster which was another SQL complaint database and ran in a distributed environment. Meaning many could access the same system at once… The early EMSCAPE database could only be accessed by whoever was on the PC it ran on.. Other copies on other PC liable to get out of sync with the master…
I am trying to make this as easy to understand as possible for those not into systems analysis or programming.
When we decided to get a network- maybe in 1989 or so– we got the DecWindows. Something the Navy did not get. The reason– it will allow our PCs to act as dumb displays for X-Window development work. We had DEC Alpha workstations in the computer room- but I could write a widget and check things with the PC in my office using a SET DISPLAY command from my VT 240 [dec– dumb terminal] to my PC node running DECWindows.. it just meant I did not have to get up and go to the computer room every time I wanted to see how something looked.
In the meantime — all of the EMENG programs would be getting an X-Window System Graphical User Interface– and Doug and I were the only two at the time doing work of this nature.
That meant– in late 1990 when John Winston asked me lead the effort for EMSCAPE– a task that had been Guy’s lead with Grace– supporting– guy got mad. Why was Grace not the lead– never mind.
I did not want the task.. I would have to work with Guy– and the lead always had to worry about a lot.. documenting, programming — everything.. Guy had also indicated he was going to be a problem. I had other programs and this simply did not look good. John insisted.. John and I had a falling out over this.. I kept my other tasks but got to pass on this one. Anaheim [our home office] became involved in the falling out between John Winston and I over this task.
I will continue later.. Posted this segment 5:31 PM– 06.12.13
Until the other morning– I thought Guy had try to claim the HR Database which was a PC system– however by 93 when I put the system into production we had network software that allowed for distributed networking.. The HR database did not go on the distributed network- data to sensitive– but other in house systems I developed did… EMSCAPE was a Navy program. CSPCAPE was the similar database system that was mine originally– and one of the systems I developed the GUI for.
I think — Grace created the database on the Dec Cluster and Doug wrote the GUI.
the original Emscape PC ORacle version– used ansi menu selection at a DOS PROMt. there may have been a couple of screens– part of the ORacle software– but the main problem the standalone status of the database which prevented multiple users from using it.
I thought there may have been a misunderstanding on my part as to whether Guy had claimed the HR System.
I then discussed an interview I had in Northern VA with ORacle. It was with a female who asked about sexual harassment. this was after I left Rockwell. I thought it odd she would ask what I would do if a manager tried to harass me.
I am not sure– if I told her about the EEOC filing. I really did not get where her question came from.. Anyway when i told this the other morning– they guy or girl said– oh– rockwell was trying to hem you up and Guy did not get it..
Yes, I believe washington wanted me insured… that said anyone who knew me– knew I would not harass on the sex issue.. Guy alleN? Because he was younger?
Guy was heavy, had an ugly bottom– now I know what that was, drank coffee loudly, and in my opinion too arrogrant [many agreed]– for his young status.. Even John programmed. I did not think him the least bit attractive. He swished when he walked. I never asked Grace why she did not put up a protest. Grace came in at 8 and left at 5. She was also having kids. she did not argue– I did not argue for her…
I did not want their task.. I had lots of others.
To have it appear I harassed him? That would have been a stretch. that looks like George Clooney nude in my bed.. would he believe that?
