wish everything was that easy to fix.
On Monday [yesterday] noticed that 3 ethernet ports [out of 4] on the Verizon FiOS router were inactive. Everything else was working, including internet, wireless and the local area network. The single ethernet port that was working was connected to my Skype LandLine phone.
There are 2 desktop windows pcs and one Mac desktop connected to the other ethernet ports and switching the cables to the 4th port [where the skye phone was connected] did allow each of the other pcs and Mac to connect– so I knew the problem was isolated to the router and not other hardware devices on the network.
When I called Verizon late Monday– they listened to what I had to say and I also explained I had turned the router on and off, used the reset socket with a prong and tried a software reset with access from a web browser to the router. Nothing worked.
There was a lightening strike somewhere close to the house late Sunday and this may have caused the problem even though the power did not go out. It was so close I was surprised nothing appeared to be wrong. They said they would send a new router– and that it would arrive Wednesday.
I am always on a wireless device unless I am testing on one of my desktops so I did not see the problem until late Monday.
Today, Tuesday the new router arrived. I thought it would arrive tomorrow. It was relatively easy to disconnect the ethernet cables and the FiOS in line from the old router and install everything on the new one.
The thing fired up correctly, however did not automatically connect to the Internet [needed to find an open IP address], so as instructed I called Verizon after the internet light remained amber for 3 minutes and they reset it from their end. Worked Like a charm.
I had to update the 3 wireless devices I use on my network- insofar as the WEP security code to allow those devices access to the new router– and I also added some new security checks.
This was all so easy– and so fast- I barely noticed the problem and then it was fixed. Literally.
Boxed up the old router, cables and stand and it’s ready to be shipped back to Verizon.
That’s how I spent part of the afternoon. I got on the elliptical at 8:00 pm and did an hour.
Earlier today– I went to the motor vehicles emissions center in Glen Burner to insure my new historic tags were not going to be a problem as related to car emissions. The guys there said they could see my new tags in the system and all was fine.
In the past– visits to the emissions center could make me cry.. today I was in and out in relatively a short amount of time. Initially the guy claimed — the system was showing my old tags as being the new historic tags. He read it wrong.
Got a lot done today.. Today is the first day in this month [August] that I did not do a least 9.6 miles on my elliptical. Only did 6.4.
That said- feel I got a lot done anyway.
