This past weekend, while researching implementation of a Java Media Player using Quicktime, I found further evidence that supports my claims. Most online discussions of Java and Java technology, are being done by higher learning activities such as universities.
When I first started playing around with Java I used command line functions and the Java Software Development Kit [SDK] provided by Sun. The first Integrated Development Environment [IDE] I downloaded for Java was provided by the same producer of my C, C++ IDE. The time stamp on the Java IDE is 1999-2000. This means that I did not development the Handy Calculator or History Calendar [see left sidebar of this blog] until at least 2000– because I used that Java IDE to develop or enhance these applications.
I mention this because in an earlier discussion I used an estimate of the late 90s for development of these tools. It was at least 2000 for the applets. I may have played around with a couple of things before that– but nothing I put into production mode [installed online].
Back to who is developing using Java today. Servlets are easier to create than Java Applets. Servlets are fast server applications that do not require GUI experience. Applets help to create Graphical User Interfaces [GUIs] for use with web pages. The technology is based on popular GUI windowing technologies like X-WINDOWS [Linux and other Unix type platforms use some form of X-Windows] or the Microsoft Windows environment.
I was able to pickup the Java Applet technology quickly because of my experience with x-windows and c. Could I do more with today’s technology? Yes, however because I am trying to keep those trying to steal or take credit for my work at bay– I tend to do things to protect what is mine and not the latest and greatest. Can I use the latest and greatest for a paying client? Yes– and I will let you know when I have done that. To date– I have not done anything for a client– except install wordpress and make changes to PHP code to add functionality the client wanted.
My goal? Do more with advertising and web services and build custom interfaces like those found on WiredPages.
Bottom line– 2000 is still to early for just anyone to pickup Java and say they opened a book and figured it out. I did. It is unlikely you did if you did not have my x-windows and c experience.
My surveillance knows who is doing all of this work– and universities also get it. Do not take credit for my work.
