I found myself in Gambrills, MD today. I was cooped up for the entire weekend [Friday and Monday inclusive]– and today I felt like getting out and just riding. I noticed at the shopping area that now anchors RT 3 and Waugh Chapel Rd and new fitness center– LA Fitness. I stopped in.
Looks to be a nice clean facility with lots of options for the those into fitness. I have been looking for an inexpensive alternative to my treadmill in case mine goes on the brink again.
The new LA Fitness center in Gambrills, MD has only been around for 3 weeks. I found all of this out when I called after arriving home. The receptionists are very noncommittal on memberships, fees and how they work so be prepared for the soft shoe [keep in mind this is also a new facility].
When I called– I did get a good rate. I also did some homework before calling so I tried to cut through some of the sales process. I base the good rate on the rates the YMCA gave for similar resources– YMCA: $100.00 registration fee– $72.00 per month. I thought this high. I am not going to quote the LA Fitness rate I received because I believe flexibility is the name of their game. That said– do your homework.
The closest YMCA to me — is in Silver Spring, MD. Gambrills, MD is also not that close to me– so both are inconvenient. Both have pools the other benefit I want from a fitness center.
Am I ready to join? I cannot leave my software unattended– not even in a locker room. I have had too much stolen during the Why Me? Search– else, I would really consider it.
My treadmill has not been giving me problems lately. Why? Static Guard, Silicone Spray and unplugging when not in use. I have a sturdy Nordic Track that was kind of expensive several years back. The static in the basement has been a real issue. Static Guard did the trick.
I wanted a fitness membership for a change of pace, in case I did have more problems with my treadmill and to use the pool. The treadmill works for me. I would recommend this form of exercise to anyone.
How do I overcome the tedium? A Verizon FIOS cable TV with a DVD player, CDs and CD Changer/ or FM stereo [Quiet Storm a favorite at night and Gospel on Sundays]. I always need music [old Stephanie Mills, Yanni and Aretha current favorites]. I find the zone and just go. The TV is often muted. The music– never.
Sometimes I am really unaware… I started searching for the nearest YMCA and then decided I should be looking for the YWCA. I called the nearest YWCA and asked “how do I join?” The girl on the phone asked “join?” She said I wanted the YMCA. Her facility was concerned with domestic violence. Learn new things everyday. For some reason I also thought they were a fitness center for women.
